Journey highlights
Indigo dyeing with a master in Tokushima
Tucked in a quiet valley once famed for its indigo fields, a centuries-old craft lives on. Here, under the guidance of a master dyer, you’ll take part in the slow, meditative process of Japanese indigo dyeing - fermenting leaves, preparing ash lye, and stirring the dye by hand. Fold the cloth, dip it in, watch it emerge green, then deepen to vivid blue as it meets the air - a transformation that feels both magical and grounded. This is more than a workshop; it’s a hands-on experience of Japan’s deep reverence for nature, tradition, and the quiet rhythm of craft.
A night in the studio
Stay the night at an 80-year-old artist’s house at the foot of Mt. Fuji - quiet, warm, and full of character. Peruse the books, sketches, and creative traces left by those who passed through before you. Step out to the sentō baths, then back in to write, draw, or simply be. A space that nourishes stillness and sparks, it begins to feel less like passing through, and more like belonging, if only for a while.
Tea with a potter
In a quiet studio, the scent of wood smoke lingers in the air, a trace of the fire that shapes earth into form. A potter’s hands move with quiet assurance, shaped by years of practice and a deep connection to the clay. Here, pottery is more than technique; it’s a way of seeing, of honouring the balance between intention and imperfection. To share tea in this space is to slow down and notice. It’s through these exchanges that you find beauty in simplicity, in patience, in things made with care.
Sketch the silence
Spend an afternoon alongside an artist who has spent years sketching the quieter corners of Kyoto - the worn signboards, moss-covered stones, narrow lanes where light filters through in slivers. Their attention lingers not on the famous sights, but on the overlooked: shadows on a wall, the curve of a tiled roof, the texture of age. This isn’t about skill or technique. It’s about noticing. Letting the pencil move slowly as the eye lingers longer. What begins as a few lines becomes a hand-drawn record of place and presence. You leave with a pocket-sized diary and a way of seeing that travels with you.
The museums of death and life
A droplet of water. A gust of wind. The hush of bare feet on concrete. This is less a museum and more a living artwork: a vast, white, shell-like space open to the sky, where water wells up from the earth and glides across the floor like a living thing. Built to honour the cycles of nature and the life of a local woman who farmed here, it’s a space to witness the unseen - time, breath, impermanence. Head down the mountain to it’s haunting twinned installation: part-archive, part-memorial, a place where heartbeats from around the world are recorded and played back, one at a time. A meditation on memory, loss, and the quiet miracle of being alive.
