The Naturalist

The Naturalist journey will take you on ancient pilgrimage roads, forests of moss and legends, and lands of pure water. Whether you are interested in spirituality or simply want to discover some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, there two merged a long time ago in Japan. This is why our itinerary refuses to separate them and will encourage you to follow those stone steps up mountains or down gorges, you will certainly touch the sacredness of nature there.

Journey Highlights

Each journey is tailored to you — these are just glimpses of what could be included.

A land of temples and shrines

Hidden among quiet forests and along winding mountain paths, Japan’s temples and shrines carry an unspoken presence. Their wooden beams resist time, while moss-covered stones mark the footsteps of pilgrims from long ago. In the early morning mist, these sacred places seem suspended between past and present. The faint scent of incense lingers in the air, and the gentle rustle of leaves whispers prayers. Stepping inside, there’s a stillness that slows the world - an invitation to pause, breathe, and simply be.

Shikoku’s treasures

Deep in the mountains, the Iya Valley remains one of Japan’s most secluded places. Known for its steep gorges, vine-draped cliffs, and ancient rope bridges, it feels like stepping back in time. The kazurabashi bridges, woven from mountain vines by fleeing samurai in the 12th century, sway gently over clear rivers, linking remote villages and forest paths. In summer evenings, fireflies light up the Iya River, their soft glow adding magic to the stillness. Visitors can soak in natural hot springs tucked into cliffs or traditional inns, watching mist roll over distant hillsides.

Cedars and Jizo statues on hiking trails

On Japan’s forest trails, the quiet watch of Jizo statues brings a gentle sense of comfort and significance. These small stone figures, often dressed in red bibs or hats, stand as guardians for travellers and children, quietly marking the path. Found near shrines or roadside altars, they offer moments of reflection along centuries-old cedar-lined routes. The shaded trails, cool and serene, invite long walks not just through nature but through layers of history and faith.

One of many pilgrimage roads

The Kumano Kodo trails wind through sacred mountains and forests, alive with the footsteps of pilgrims past. Tall cypress trees line the paths, and small shrines appear along the way - dedicated to local deities connected to wind, river, and time. The fresh scent of rain and the occasional toll of a bell add to the atmosphere of the journey. At the trail’s end lies Ise, home to the Grand Shrine, Ise Jingū, surrounded by peaceful groves and respected for centuries. Here, nature and tradition meet quietly, offering a place of reflection. Kumano and Ise remain important cultural landmarks, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate Japan’s rich heritage.

Kyushu’s land of fire

In Kyushu’s heart, mist clings to volcanic ridges and the earth murmurs with ancient fire. In Takachiho, steep gorges echo with rushing waterfalls, and sacred cliffs tell of the sun goddess’s grandson’s descent, marking Japan’s divine beginnings. Smoke curls softly from distant peaks like Aso, a reminder that the land itself breathes with life forged in fire. Paths wind through forests and lava fields, worn smooth by monks and wanderers finding the sacred in stone and ashes. At twilight, when kagura dances flicker in lantern light, the line between heaven and earth grows thin. The people of Kyushu take great pride in their rich heritage, honouring customs while welcoming each day with resilience and warmth.
